Artisan Workshop in Medieval European City XII–XV c.: Industrial and Social Stratification and Relations Between Stratas (Based on the Materials of Workshop Charters)

Keywords: workshop charters, medieval workshop, stratification of artisans, legal status, corporation

Abstract

The article reveals the essence and peculiarities of industrial and social stratification within the workshop in a medieval city, and also defines the legal status of masters, apprentices and pupils in the legal space of the workshop and city. It is shown that the status combined rights and obligations in the industrial, economic, social, moral and ethical, domestic spheres of life. It is proved that the features of medieval reality and consciousness defined the three-part hierarchical stratification of the workshop as a form of corporate organization of artisans in a European city. Stratification was legally enshrined in workshop charters – local legal acts, composed mainly of shopkeepers and regulating different aspects of the workshop and artisans' lives. The workshop social stratas included masters, apprentices and students. Each strata had a certain status, in which the rights and obligations in the sphere of industrial, economic, social, moral and ethical, and household were syncretically combined. Relations between stratas within the workshop in the XII–XIII centuries were formed under the distinct influence of community, corporate mentality and patriarchal relations. All members of the workshop were bound by reciprocal rights and obligations, involving mutual responsibility, mutual assistance and support. The traditional links between stratas within the workshop were destroyed during the XIV and XV centuries hence the penetration of capitalist relations inside the medieval workshop organization.
